What to know
The Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples (北方民族博物館, Hoppō Minzoku Hakubutsukan) showcases the cultures and traditional daily lives of peoples from the northern subarctic regions of the world, including the Ainu, First Nations of northern Canada, Inuit, Sami, and Siberian peoples.
Opened in 1993, this well-designed museum covers topics like clothing, food, transportation, dwellings, and spirituality through numerous exhibits, highlighting both the differences and many similarities among these groups. There is also a section on Okhotsk Culture. English information is readily available.
Buses run from Abashiri Bus Terminal via Abashiri Station to the museum every 1-2 hours (15 minutes, 480 yen one way from Abashiri Station). Get off at Hoppo Minzoku Hakubutsukan-mae bus stop (北方民族博物館前) in front of the museum. Service is less frequent during shoulder seasons and not available on weekdays in the off-season.
