What to know
Higashiyama Onsen (東山温泉) is a hot spring resort nestled in a valley just east of downtown Aizu Wakamatsu. The area features several large hotels and a handful of shops for visitors. While the thermal baths are relaxing and the surrounding valley is scenic, the resort feels somewhat dated and overbuilt.
One standout ryokan in the area is Mukaitaki Ryokan, a traditional wooden inn that contrasts with the nearby concrete hotels. It is considered one of the finest and most atmospheric onsen ryokan in all of Japan.
Higashiyama Onsen is accessible via the Aizu Loop Bus (35 minutes from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station), though around lunchtime most buses only go as far as Aizu Bukeyashiki, from which the resort is a 10–15 minute walk.
