What to know
Kushiro Marshland (Kushiro Shitsugen) in Hokkaido became a national park in 1987 to protect Japan's largest wetland and marsh habitat. This area supports the only known population of endangered Japanese Cranes in the country.
The park lies between Kushiro and Akan National Park, making it a convenient stop when traveling between the two. It receives little snow even in winter, offering year-round bird watching, nature viewing, and walking trails. The cranes attract many photographers throughout the year.
Japanese Cranes (Tancho, meaning "red head") were once thought extinct in Japan due to overhunting and habitat loss. In 1926, about 20 birds were rediscovered in the marshes around Kushiro. Thanks to conservation efforts, the population has rebounded to over 1,000 birds.
The cranes are most spectacular when they dance, often in pairs, with seemingly choreographed dips and jumps. They are best seen in winter when they gather at feeding sites. These sites are easiest to reach by car, but public transportation is also possible.
Other ways to experience the marshland include walking along the trails or joining a canoe or kayak tour down the distributaries of the Kushiro River. These activities are available year-round and offer a unique perspective of the park. Kayaking down the river in the marshland is a popular option. Centers: Akan International Crane Center: Hours: 9:00 to 17:00, Closed: No closing days, Admission: 480 yen (includes Tancho Observation Center). This museum, breeding center, and sanctuary allows crane viewing year-round and has exhibits on crane history and ecology with English explanations. Kushiro City Marsh Observatory: Hours: 8:00 to 18:00 (Apr to Oct), 9:00 to 17:00 (Nov to Mar), Closed: New Year holidays, Admission: 480 yen. The observatory connects to the Kushiro Shitsugen Viewpoint via boardwalk paths for easy walks, and houses exhibits about the marshlands. Feeding stations: Open from November to March to offset winter food shortages. Visitors can watch feedings once or twice a day, depending on the station. Feeding times are the best for seeing groups of cranes together.
The landscape of Kushiro Shitsugen National Park can be viewed from various viewpoints around the park.
