What to know
Lake Kussharo (Kussharoko) is a stunning caldera lake in Akan Mashu National Park. Spanning 57 kilometers in circumference, it is the park's largest lake. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including fishing, hiking, kayaking, and cycling around the lake.
Another highlight is the free outdoor hot spring baths (rotenburo) scattered along the lakeshore. Unlike most hot springs in Japan, these allow swimsuits. However, some baths may not be as well maintained.
A must-visit spot is the Wakoto Peninsula at the southern end of the lake. It features pleasant walking trails through the forest, two additional hot spring baths, and sulfurous vents at the tip.
During winter (January 24 to March 1, 2026) and summer (July 26 to August 31, 2025), limited bus services run from Kawayu Onsen Station to the western shores of Lake Kussharo. The rest of the year, public transport is nearly absent. The best way to explore is by rental car or bicycle.
