What to know
The Complex of Manyo Culture (万葉文化館, Manyō Bunkakan) is a large, elaborate museum dedicated to the Manyoshu, a famous poetry anthology largely composed during the Asuka Period (538-710). This anthology is a cornerstone of Japanese literature, capturing the essence of early Japanese aesthetics with numerous references to the Asuka region, including the Yamato mountains.
The museum features two main exhibition halls. The first displays modern paintings inspired by the Manyoshu, while the second is an interactive area with models of people and buildings, a theater, and dramatic displays. There is also a special exhibition hall, a reading room, a museum shop, and a cafe. The complex is built on the site of Japan's first known mint, whose foundations are visible and coins are exhibited.
The Complex of Manyo Culture is located next to the Manyo Bunkakan Nishi-guchi bus stop, accessible via the Kame Loop Bus from Kashiharajingu-mae Station (23 minutes, 310 yen, one bus per hour). It is also about a 15-minute bicycle ride from Kashiharajingu-mae Station.
