Hells (Jigoku)

Visitor guide for the hells (jigoku) of Beppu.

What to know

Beppu's "hells" (jigoku) are seven extraordinary hot springs designed for viewing rather than bathing. They feature steaming ponds in vivid colors, bubbling mud pools, and other geothermal wonders.

The hells are presented in a somewhat touristy style that might not suit everyone's taste.

Five of the seven hells are in the Kannawa district, while the other two are in the more remote Shibaseki district.

The Kannawa hells are easily reached by frequent buses from JR Beppu Station in about 15 minutes. Buses number 5 and 7 are the fastest. Get off at Kannawa bus terminal, from where the hells are within walking distance.

Bus number 16/16A runs twice an hour from Kannawa to Shibaseki (5 minutes), where the remaining two hells are located. The bus then continues via Kamegawa Station to Beppu Station (40 minutes). Bus number 26/26A runs in the opposite direction of bus number 16/16A.

Beppu is also easy to explore by rental car, with free parking available at all hells.
