What to know
Hodosan Shrine (寳登山神社, Hodosan Jinja) is an ancient shrine in Nagatoro, a town about ten kilometers north of Chichibu. Founded in 110 AD at the foot of Mount Hodo, it has long been a place where visitors pray for protection from natural disasters. The current buildings date from the early Meiji Period and are built in the Gongen-zukuri style, with the main hall and prayer hall connected under a single roof.
The shrine buildings are richly decorated with intricate, brightly colored carvings. Surrounded by lush forest, the shrine has a serene atmosphere and is one of the best spots in the area for autumn foliage. A short walk away is the Hodosan Ropeway, which takes visitors to the top of Mount Hodo, where walking trails offer nice views of the surrounding landscape.
Hodosan Shrine is a ten-minute walk from Nagatoro Station and the Nagatoro river boat cruises. From Chichibu, take the Chichibu Railway to Nagatoro; the one-way trip takes 20 minutes and costs 550 yen, with two trains per hour.
