Mitsumine Shrine

Visitor guide for Mitsumine Shrine, a shrine in the deep mountains of Chichibu.

What to know

Mitsumine Shrine (三峯神社, Mitsumine-jinja) is an atmospheric shrine perched atop Mount Mitsumine in Chichibu. A historic center of mountain worship, the shrine's wooded grounds are filled with richly decorated buildings. Today, it's easily reached by bus or car, but also remains accessible via hiking trails that connect the mountain with the valley below and neighboring peaks.

At the entrance stands a rare triple torii gate (mitsu-torii). Flanking it are two stone wolves instead of the usual guardian dogs (koma inu). Mitsumine Shrine is one of the few shrines that venerates the Japanese wolf, an extinct animal revered as a protector against misfortune. To the left of the gate, a small treasure hall displays artifacts about the shrine's history, including wolf pelts and documents linking the imperial family to the shrine.

The shrine's defining feature is the intricate carvings adorning many buildings, especially the Zuishinmon Gate and the offering hall. These vivid carvings depict creatures and flowers, creating an opulence rarely seen in Japan, comparable only to Nikko's Toshogu Shrine.

Don't miss the small pavilion offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The grounds also house several smaller shrines dedicated to various deities.

Take a bus from Seibu-Chichibu Station to the final stop, Mitsumine-jinja (75 minutes, 950 yen one way). Alternatively, board the bus from Mitsumineguchi Station to Mitsumine-jinja (55 minutes, 690 yen one way).

To hike up from the base, take a bus to the Owa bus stop (大輪, 35 minutes, 570 yen from Seibu-Chichibu Station or 10 minutes, 320 yen from Mitsumineguchi Station), where the trailhead begins. Buses run every 1-2 hours. The mostly dirt trail winds steeply through forest, taking about three hours to ascend. Proper footwear is essential.
