Yokokan Garden

Visitor guide for Yokokan, a traditional landscape garden in central Fukui City.

What to know

Yokokan Garden (養浩館庭園, Yōkōkan Teien) is a classic landscape garden in central Fukui City, featuring a central pond and a sukiya-style villa. Just a few hundred meters from the former site of Fukui Castle's inner ward, this garden was once the retreat of the local lords who governed Echizen Province during the Edo Period (1603–1868).

The garden incorporates many traditional elements: a shallow pond, a stone bridge, seasonal plants, and large stones—some sourced from the Tojinbo Cliffs. Its highlight is the strikingly beautiful villa that seems to float on the water.

Inside, the villa is divided into several rooms, including the lord's room, a moon-viewing room, and a bathroom with a cedar bathtub. The original buildings were destroyed in World War II air raids but were reconstructed in the 1990s to match their mid-Edo Period appearance.

Today, all rooms are open to visitors, who can enjoy lovely views across the pond from the open veranda.

Yokokan Garden is a 15-minute walk northwest of Fukui Station.
