What to know
Kitakyushu (北九州, Kitakyūshū, literally "North Kyushu") is the northernmost city on Kyushu island and has been a vital transportation hub for both land and sea routes since ancient times. It serves as the gateway between Honshu and Kyushu and is an important port for international trade. The city was established in 1963 through the merger of five independent cities: Kokura, Moji, Yahata, Tobata, and Wakamatsu. Today, it remains a major industrial center, contributing significantly to Japan's manufacturing sector.
During the Meiji Period (1868-1912), the government recognized Kitakyushu's strategic geographical advantages and rapidly developed port facilities and railway infrastructure, spurring further commercial and industrial growth. Thanks to the preservation of many historic buildings from that era, visitors can still experience the charm of past decades, especially around Moji Port.
