Fukue Island

Travel guide for Fukue Island, the largest of the Goto Islands.

What to know

Fukue Island (福江島, Fukue-jima) is the largest and most populous of the Goto Islands. Its main settlement, the town around Fukue Port on the east coast, serves as the region's hub. The entire island is part of Goto City, which also includes Hisaka and Naru islands.

The island's rolling hills are dotted with churches and temples, including the oldest of both in the Goto Islands, along with other historical sites often located near pristine natural spots. Natural highlights range from beaches and rugged coastlines to mountains offering panoramic views of neighboring islands.

The port town provides a convenient base with hotels, restaurants, and shops. Here you'll also find the ruins of a castle that was the seat of the Goto fief during the Edo Period. Today, only a section of the moat and an old residence remain, with much of the grounds occupied by a school. Still, the castle remnants and the adjacent samurai district—though largely replaced by modern buildings—offer a pleasant stroll.

Some of Fukue's top attractions are listed below:

Fukue boasts multiple sites related to the feudal lords who ruled the islands during the Edo Period (1603–1868), especially around the centrally located former castle:

Around twenty churches have been built across Fukue since the end of the feudal era. Two of the most notable are listed below:
