What to know
Mount Kasayama (笠山) is a 112-meter-high mountain on a peninsula about six kilometers north of Hagi's city center. Its summit features a small crater 30 meters in both diameter and depth, which visitors can explore by descending a staircase or walking around on a short trail. An observation deck offers fine views over the Sea of Japan.
At the base of Mount Kasayama lies Myojinike Pond, a pleasant spot for a leisurely walk. In the nearby woods, the Kaza-ana Holes are openings in the rocky forest floor where cool air constantly flows out. This natural air conditioning is caused by the evaporation of rain and seawater that has seeped through the rock, cooling the surrounding air. The holes are especially popular in summer, and meals and drinks are served around them.
Mount Kasayama is located about six kilometers north of Hagi's city center.
Buses run roughly once per hour from Hagi Bus Center to the Koshigahama (越ヶ浜) bus stop, just steps from Myojinike Pond. Buses head for Horikoshi (堀越) or Nagoeki-mae (奈古駅前). The one-way trip from the bus center takes 15 minutes and costs 310 yen. Walking from the pond to Kasayama's summit takes about 30 minutes.
Alternatively, Myojinike Pond is a 30-minute walk from the nearest train station, JR Koshigahama Station (5 minutes, 150 yen from Higashi-Hagi Station), but train service is infrequent.
Myojinike Pond is about 15 minutes by car from the city center, or 30-45 minutes by bicycle. A taxi from Higashi-Hagi Station costs around 2000 yen to the pond, and about 2500 yen to the summit.
