What to know
Hakodate Port was among the first Japanese ports opened to international trade near the end of the feudal era. Several red brick warehouses from those trading days still stand along the waterfront in Hakodate's bay area. They have been transformed into an atmospheric complex filled with shops, restaurants, and entertainment options.
In addition to the usual range of trendy souvenir, fashion, interior, and sweets shops, the complex also houses a restaurant, a beer hall, a wedding chapel, and offers sightseeing cruises of the bay.
The red brick warehouses are a 15-20 minute walk from Hakodate Station or a five minute walk from the Jujigai tram stop (5 minutes, 210 yen from Hakodate Station).
