What to know
Choanji Temple (長安寺, Chōanji) is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple located in the Sengokuhara area of Hakone. Founded in 1356, it sits quietly at the foot of a hill, offering a peaceful atmosphere. The temple features a small network of pleasant walking trails that wind through its wooded grounds and cemetery.
What makes Choanji especially charming are the over 200 statues of rakan (disciples of Buddha) scattered throughout the grounds. These statues began appearing in the 1980s and have been accumulating ever since. Each one has a unique face and pose—some are contemplative and serious, others casual and humorous. Many display a modern artistic edge in style and expressiveness compared to other rakan collections.
In autumn, the temple grounds become one of Hakone's best spots to enjoy fall colors. The peak season usually arrives around mid-November.
Choanji Temple is just a two-minute walk from the Sengoku (仙石) bus stop, served by Hakone Tozan Buses and Odakyu Buses. The one-way ride from Hakone-Yumoto takes about 25 minutes and costs 950 yen; from Togendai it takes 10-15 minutes and costs 560 yen. Buses run several times per hour and are covered by the Hakone Free Pass.
