What to know
The Hakone Open Air Museum (箱根彫刻の森美術館, Hakone Chōkoku No Mori Bijutsukan) successfully blends nature and art, displaying sculptures across its grounds with stunning views of the surrounding valley and mountains.
The museum features both outdoor and indoor exhibition spaces. The Picasso Exhibition Hall, for instance, spans two floors and showcases paintings, sculptures, and ceramics by the artist, along with photographs from different stages of his life.
Outside, the lush lawns are dotted with abstract sculptures by Japanese and international artists. One standout piece is the Symphonic Sculpture, a tower-like structure visitors can enter, ascending a spiral staircase lined with colorful stained glass to a viewing platform overlooking the park and mountains.
The museum also offers rotating exhibition halls, shops, and cafes with views of the installations, several kids' areas including Zig Zag World where children can play in a soft art installation, and an outdoor foot bath.
The Hakone Open Air Museum is a short walk from Chokoku No Mori Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway (30 minutes, 460 yen from Hakone-Yumoto, covered by the Hakone Free Pass), the last stop before Gora. From Gora, it's a 10-15 minute walk.
