Hakuba

One of Japan’s best ski resorts

What to know

Hakuba (白馬), nestled in the Northern Alps of Nagano Prefecture, ranks among Japan's premier ski destinations, boasting reliable snowfall and multiple large ski resorts.

The area gained international fame during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, hosting alpine events (downhill, super-G, combined) and Nordic competitions (ski jumping, cross-country). Olympic venues like the Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium remain operational, and the nearby Hakuba Olympic Village Memorial Hall offers a small but engaging museum.

Access to Hakuba is convenient from Tokyo, Nagoya, and the Kansai region. While a day trip from Tokyo is possible, an overnight or multi-night stay is recommended to fully experience the area. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, visitors can enjoy hot springs (onsen) scattered around town.

Ten major resorts, including all listed on this page, collaborate on the "Hakuba Valley Ticket," valid at any participating resort. A one-day pass costs 10,400 yen, with longer durations and combination tickets available. Some local hotels offer additional discounts for guests.

A ticket purchased at Hakuba Goryu or Hakuba 47 grants access to both resorts.

Located just outside Hakuba village limits, these adjacent resorts are connected and share a ticket system.
