What to know
Kokoen (好古園, Kōkoen) is a relatively modern Japanese garden, opened in 1992 on the former site of the feudal lord's west residence (Nishi-Oyashiki). It comprises nine separate walled gardens, each designed in a different Edo Period style.
Highlights include the lord's residence garden with a pond and waterfall, a tea garden where visitors can enjoy matcha, a pine tree garden, a bamboo garden, and a flower garden.
Kokoen Garden sits right next to Himeji Castle, just a short walk west of the castle's main gate (Otemon Gate). From Himeji Station, it's a 20-minute walk or a 5-minute bus ride (210 yen one way) or taxi (800-1000 yen one way) along Otemae-dori Street, which runs straight from the station to the castle and garden.
