What to know
Situated about six kilometers from central Hiraizumi, Takkoku no Iwaya (達谷窟) is a temple partially carved into a cliff face. It was built in the 9th century and dedicated to the god of warriors, during Japan's northern expansion and conflicts with the indigenous Emishi people.
At the base of the cliff lies a small pond garden, while additional temple halls can be found a short walk into the woods to the right of the cliff.
Takkoku no Iwaya is not accessible by public transport. By bicycle, it takes about 20–40 minutes from Hiraizumi Station; a taxi ride costs around 2,500 yen one way.
