What to know
Oboke Gorge (大歩危, Ōboke) and the smaller Koboke Gorge (小歩危) downstream are steep, narrow gorges near the entrance to the Iya Valley, often visited together. Carved by the swirling rapids of the Yoshino River, their names mean "big dangerous steps" and "small dangerous steps," reflecting the jagged, rocky walls that make navigation tricky.
These gorges are among Japan's top outdoor destinations, rivaling Minakami in Gunma Prefecture. They are famous for stunning natural scenery and a wide range of outdoor activities, including whitewater rafting and canyoning.
The hourly limited express trains between Okayama and Kochi stop at Oboke Station. Alternatively, from Awa-Ikeda Station, take a train (30 minutes, 530 yen by infrequent local train or 980 yen for an unreserved seat on an hourly limited express) or bus (40 minutes, 670 yen, every 2-3 hours).
