Kagoshima Aquarium

Complete visitor guide for Kagoshima Aquarium, a seven-floor aquarium in Kagoshima City located just beside the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal.

What to know

Kagoshima Aquarium (Io World Kagoshima Suizokukan) sits right on the waterfront next to the Sakurajima ferry terminal. Opened in 1997, this seven-story facility focuses on local marine life, including the islands south of Kagoshima Prefecture.

The highlight is the massive Kuroshio Tank, home to fish of all sizes—from tiny schooling fish to rays and a giant whale shark. Other exhibits feature sea otters, giant crabs, coral reefs, electric eels, and mangroves. The Dolphin Pool hosts three shows daily, and sometimes dolphins swim freely in the canals outside, performing tricks.

The aquarium is a five-minute walk from Suizokukan-guchi tram stop (170 yen) or about an hour by City View Bus from Kagoshima Chuo Station.
