Kirishima

Travel guide for Kirishima, a national park shared between Kagoshima and Miyazaki Prefectures.

What to know

Kirishima (霧島) is an active volcanic mountain range straddling the border between Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures. The area features mountains, highlands, volcanic lakes, and hot springs, offering excellent hiking amid beautiful mountainous scenery. However, some trails are currently closed due to a recent eruption of Mount Shinmoedake.

The Kirishima mountains hold a significant place in Japanese mythology. They are believed to be where the god Ninigi no Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, descended to rule the earth and establish the imperial lineage. At the summit of Mount Takachiho-no-mine, you can see the spear that Ninigi no Mikoto used to descend to earth, embedded in the mountaintop.

Ebino Kogen and Kirishima Onsen are the two main resort towns in the Kirishima area. Ebino Kogen, on the Miyazaki side, is a small village with a few hotels set in a highland surrounded by mountains and volcanic lakes. On the Kagoshima side, Kirishima Onsen is a more developed hot spring town with excellent baths and scenic views over Kagoshima Prefecture.
