What to know

Kakunodate Castle was a key regional fortress, and a small castle town grew around it in the late 1500s. The town was relocated to its present location in 1620, marking the founding of Kakunodate Town and the castle's demolition due to a shogunate policy change.

Today, nothing on the hilltop where the castle once stood hints at its former importance. An overgrown path climbs the steep slope to a flat area with only a park bench. Those who make the short hike are rewarded with a panoramic view of Kakunodate town and the Hinokinaigawa River.

The former castle site lies on the hill north of Kakunodate's samurai district. It is about a 20-30 minute walk from the district.
