Ankokuronji Temple

Complete visitor guide for Ankokuronji Temple in Kamakura, a Nichiren Buddhist temple founded by the monk himself. Includes hours, admission, and hiking trail info.

What to know

Ankokuronji (安国論寺) is one of several Nichiren Buddhist temples located along the hills in southeastern Kamakura. Founded around 1253 by Nichiren himself when he first arrived in Kamakura, the temple is believed to have been his residence for several years.

Visitors can enjoy a short hiking trail through the wooded hills surrounding the temple buildings, offering a pleasant view of Kamakura city along the way. Some sections of the trail are quite steep, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended.

Ankokuronji is about a 20-25 minute walk southeast from Kamakura Station.
