Myohonji Temple

Complete visitor guide for Myohonji Temple in Kamakura, including hours, admission, and hiking trail information.

What to know

Myohonji Temple (Myōhonji) is one of several Nichiren Buddhist temples nestled along the southeastern hills of Kamakura. Founded in 1260 by Hiki Yoshimoto, it houses a statue of Nichiren to the left of the main hall.

The temple is linked to other nearby temples and a shrine via the Gionyama hiking trail, which winds through Kamakura's wooded hills. The trail has some steep and rough sections, so sturdy footwear and dry weather are recommended.

Myohonji is a ten-minute walk east of Kamakura Station.
