Nishi Chaya District

Visitor guide for Kanazawa

What to know

A chaya (teahouse) is an exclusive restaurant where geisha entertain guests with song and dance. Kanazawa preserves three chaya districts: Higashi Chayagai (Eastern), Nishi Chayagai (Western), and Kazuemachi. Each has its own character, with a mix of shops, cafes, and teahouses.

The Nishi Chaya District (Nishi Chayagai) is a compact area just a short walk from the Ninja Temple. It is much smaller and quieter than Higashi Chayagai, with only one public attraction: the Nishi Chaya Shiryokan museum. This museum displays the district's history and serves as a meeting point for free guided tours (Japanese only).

The Nishi Chaya District is a short walk from Hirokoji bus stop, which is 20 minutes from Kanazawa Station on the Left Loop of the Kanazawa Loop Bus.
