Tokashiki Island

Travel guide for Tokashiki Island, the largest of the Kerama Islands chain.

What to know

Tokashiki Island (渡嘉敷島, Tokashiki-jima) is the largest island in the Kerama chain. While it may not be as famous as Zamami, Tokashiki boasts several lovely beaches, and its interior is covered with forested hills offering hiking trails and viewpoints.

The best swimming season runs from May to October. From December to March, air temperatures often drop below 20°C, which many find too cool for swimming. The two main beaches lie along the west coast and have facilities, rentals, and tour shops. There are also many smaller, less accessible beaches with few or no amenities.

From January to March, whale watching tours let you see humpback whales that migrate from the cold Aleutians and Bering Sea to warmer Okinawan waters to breed. Book through tour operators or your accommodation.

Several observatories around the island offer panoramic views. Notable ones include Teruyama Observatory on the west side, overlooking the two main beaches, and Minato no Mieru Oka Observatory on the east side, with views of Tokashiki Village. Hiking trails cross the forested interior, where seasonal flowers bloom, and you'll find war memorials commemorating villagers who died in mass suicides during World War II.

High-speed boats and car ferries connect Naha's Tomari Port with Tokashiki Port. Car ferries run once daily (70 minutes, ¥1,690 one way), while high-speed ferries run 2–3 times daily (40 minutes, ¥2,530 one way). Round-trip tickets cost ¥3,210 and ¥4,810 respectively.

A small village ferry connects Tokashiki's Aharen Port to Zamami and Aka islands twice daily; tickets must be reserved at least one day in advance. The one-way trip takes 20 minutes to Aka and 35 minutes to Zamami, costing ¥1,100.
