What to know
Kinugawa Onsen is a popular hot spring destination near Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture. The clear, mild waters from the area's springs have been used since the Edo Period (1603–1868) and can be enjoyed at Kinugawa Onsen's ryokan.
Most visitors stay overnight at one of the large hotel ryokan overlooking the Kinugawa River. Each ryokan has its own baths, some open to day visitors. A few free foot baths (ashiyu) are scattered around town. The public bath closed in 2024.
More hot springs can be found in Kawaji Onsen further upriver, as well as in Yunishigawa Onsen and Okukinu Onsen, two rustic hot spring villages in remote side valleys.
