Kiroro Ski Resort

Ski resort between Sapporo and Niseko

What to know

Kiroro Ski Resort (キロロスキー場, Kiroro Skījō) is a large snow resort just outside Otaru, not far from Sapporo and Niseko. Its position near the Sea of Japan brings huge amounts of light powder snow, even by Hokkaido's generous standards.

Kiroro offers over twenty courses with terrain evenly split among beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Besides long groomed and ungroomed runs, there are several in-bounds forested off-piste areas with the resort's deepest snow. Multiple gates provide access to side and backcountry for groups that submit climbing plans at the main lodge.

The base complex is well developed, with restaurants, shops, and onsen. Families can enjoy snowmobile rides, snow tubing, and a children's snow park. Although there is no town or village, the resort has self-contained entertainment and accommodation at the Yu Kiroro luxury residences and two Club Med resorts.

Hokkaido Resort Liner connects Kiroro Ski Resort by bus from central Sapporo from mid December to early April. The one-way trip costs 2500 yen and takes 90-150 minutes depending on the boarding point. Reservations are required.

Alternatively, the resort is about 70 minutes by car from central Sapporo. Winter driving skills are necessary.
