What to know
Kochi (高知, Kōchi) is the capital of Kochi Prefecture on the southern coast of Shikoku. The city is small and friendly, with a relaxed atmosphere and a touch of southern charm.
Kochi offers several attractions worth visiting. A well-preserved hilltop castle from the feudal era marks the downtown area. Nearby on Mount Godaisan, pilgrims visit Chikurinji Temple, one of the 88 temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The city is also proud to be the home of Sakamoto Ryoma, a key figure in the Meiji Restoration. The Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum sits at beautiful Katsurahama Beach, just south of the city center.
