What to know
Yumomi (湯もみ) is a centuries-old technique used in Kusatsu to cool steaming hot spring water to a comfortable bathing temperature without diluting it with cold water, thereby preserving its unique mineral properties.
The cooling is achieved by stirring the water with large wooden paddles, performed by a troupe of locals who accompany the process with a traditional folk song and dance. Daily yumomi performances take place at the Netsunoyu building, right next to the Yubatake. Each show lasts about half an hour, and some audience members are invited to try stirring the water themselves.
Netsunoyu, where the yumomi performances are held, is located directly beside the iconic Yubatake.
