Adachi Museum of Art

Complete visitor guide for the Adachi Museum of Art near Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, famous for its award-winning Japanese garden and art collection.

What to know

The Adachi Museum of Art (足立美術館, Adachi Bijutsukan) was founded in 1970 by local businessman Adachi Zenko, who wanted to share his love for Japanese art and garden design. He believed that experiencing gardens and artworks together would deepen people's appreciation of Japanese culture.

The museum is famous for its award-winning garden, named the best in Japan every year since 2003 by the Journal of Japanese Gardening. The garden changes with the seasons and can be enjoyed year-round. Visitors view it from inside the museum building, as the garden itself is not open for walking.

In addition to the gardens, the museum displays a rotating collection of nearly 1,300 20th-century paintings and artworks. It also features a permanent exhibition of works by Yokoyama Taikan and a ceramics gallery.

The Adachi Museum of Art is about an hour from Matsue. Take a train from Matsue Station to Yasugi Station (20 minutes, 420 yen by local or rapid train, covered by the Japan Rail Pass). From Yasugi, free shuttle buses run twice per hour to the museum (20 minutes). Limited express trains from Okayama also stop at Yasugi Station before continuing to Matsue.
