What to know
Several of Matsue's former samurai mansions have been preserved along the busy road just north of the inner moat of Matsue Castle.
Among them is the Matsue Bukeyashiki (松江武家屋敷), a former samurai residence now open to the public. It offers a fine example of a high-ranking samurai family's home in a mid-sized castle town. Nearby stands the former residence of Lafcadio Hearn.
The samurai district lies just north of Matsue Castle along the moat. It is connected to Matsue's railway stations by the Lakeline loop bus.
