Godaido Hall

Visitor guide for Godaido, a small temple hall in Matsushima.

What to know

Godaido (五大堂, Godaidō) is a small temple hall on an islet right next to the pier. Thanks to its prominent location, it has become a symbol of Matsushima. Built in 807, Godaido houses five statues enshrined by the same priest who founded nearby Zuiganji Temple. The statues are only shown to the public once every 33 years—the next viewing is scheduled for 2039.

The current building is a 1604 reconstruction by local feudal lord Date Masamune. The exterior is decorated with small carvings of the twelve animals of the lunar calendar, three on each side. Despite its exposed location, Godaido suffered no major damage in the earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011.

Godaido stands right next to the pier of Matsushima, a ten-minute walk from JR Matsushima Kaigan Station.
