What to know
Nambu Ironware (Nanbu Tekki) is a traditional craft from Iwate Prefecture, primarily produced in Morioka and Oshu. Its origins date back to the late 17th century when the Nambu clan invited a Kyoto artisan to create a tea ceremony water vessel. Classic handmade items include kettles, teapots, and wind chimes, while modern pieces feature updated designs and a variety of colors.
Nambu kettles are prized for their excellent heat distribution and retention, and they resist rust. Water boiled in these kettles is said to become soft and delicious, as the iron removes chlorine from tap water. These qualities have earned Nambu Tekki high praise and recognition, and they remain highly regarded today.
Several manufacturers operate in Iwate Prefecture, with Iwachu in Morioka and Oigen in Oshu being the most famous. A number of Nambu Ironware studios and shops can be found in downtown Morioka near the castle park. Visitors can browse a variety of kettles and pots, and purchase unique ironware souvenirs.
