What to know
Nozawa Onsen (野沢温泉) is a quiet hot spring and ski town in northern Nagano Prefecture. Its 13 traditional public baths (sotoyu), maintained by the local community since the Edo Period, are free for everyone to use.
The town comes alive in winter when visitors flock to its excellent ski resort. The resort hosted the biathlon events at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and is very foreigner-friendly, with English menus, maps, and signs. It's one of Japan's best places to combine great skiing with a classic onsen town experience.
