What to know

The area around Asuka (飛鳥) and Sakurai (桜井) in Nara Prefecture, about 20 kilometers south of Nara City, is considered the cradle of Japanese civilization. It was here that the first Japanese emperors established their capitals, and many of the country's oldest shrines, temples, tombs, stone monuments, and archaeological sites can be found.

Kyoto served as Japan's capital for over a thousand years from 794 to 1868, while Nara was the first permanent capital from 710 to 784. Before 710, the political center first lay around Sakurai and later around Asuka. During this period, there was significant influence from the Asian mainland, and Buddhism was introduced to Japan via the Korean Peninsula. Today, the area also attracts visitors with its tranquil, rural charm.
