What to know
Mount Yoshino (Yoshinoyama) in Yoshino Town, Nara Prefecture, is Japan's premier cherry blossom destination. Over 30,000 cherry trees blanket the slopes, creating a breathtaking spectacle as visitors stroll along the mountain roads.
Beyond the blossoms, Yoshino boasts a deep history that makes it worthwhile year-round. As the starting point for the pilgrimage to sacred Mount Omine, Yoshinoyama has been a center of Shugendo mountain worship for centuries. The secluded town also served as a refuge for historical figures like Emperor Go-Daigo, who established a rival imperial court here in the 14th century.
In 2004, Yoshino, along with Mount Koya and Kumano, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range."
