Visitor guide for the Narita Museum of Aeronautical Sciences.

What to know

The Museum of Aeronautical Sciences (航空科学博物館, Kōkū Kagaku Hakubutsukan) is an aviation museum located just outside Narita Airport at the southern end of its main runway. It appeals to both plane enthusiasts and casual visitors, featuring numerous aircraft displays, simulators, and interactive exhibits.

Inside, you'll find full-scale replicas of historic planes and components from modern aircraft, such as the landing gear and engine of a Boeing 747. You can also try piloting a plane using one of the museum's life-sized simulators.

The third floor offers an outdoor observation deck with views of the southern end of Narita Airport's runway. The fourth floor houses a restaurant, and the fifth floor features an indoor observatory modeled after a flight control tower. Both observation areas and the restaurant provide excellent views of planes taking off and landing.

In the yard in front of the museum, over a dozen aircraft are on display, mostly smaller propeller planes and helicopters. Some of these aircraft are open for entry.

Beyond the museum's observation decks, there are several public viewpoints around the airport for watching runway activity. The Sakura no Oka and Hikoki no Oka observation areas are near the southern end of the runway close to the museum, while Sakura no Yama is at the northern end. Observation decks are also available on each of the airport's terminal buildings.

The ride from the airport to the museum takes about 15 minutes. Two bus services are available: JR buses and Narita Airport Transport buses. JR buses depart from terminals 1 and 2 roughly every 1-3 hours. Narita Airport Transport buses depart about hourly from terminal 2, but fewer than half stop directly at the museum (except on weekends and holidays when all stop there); the others serve only the "Nanbu Butsuryu" (南部物流) bus stop, which is a 5-10 minute walk from the museum. Fares are 240 yen one way for JR buses and 220 yen for the other buses.
