What to know
Plunging nearly 100 meters, Kegon Waterfall (華厳の滝, Kegon no taki) is Nikko's most celebrated cascade. It ranks among Japan's three most beautiful waterfalls, alongside Nachi Waterfall in Wakayama and Fukuroda Waterfall in Ibaraki.
As the sole outlet of Lake Chuzenji, the waterfall can be viewed from a free observation deck within easy walking distance, or from a paid platform at the base reached by a 100-meter elevator ride for more dramatic vistas. For a panoramic view combining the falls and the lake, head to Akechidaira Observatory, accessible via ropeway from Akechidaira Plateau.
Kegon Waterfall is a prime autumn foliage spot, with surrounding trees peaking from mid to late October. In winter, the falls often freeze nearly solid, creating a striking icy spectacle.
The waterfall is a short walk from Chuzenji Onsen bus terminal. The bus ride from JR or Tobu Nikko Station to Chuzenji Onsen takes about 50 minutes, costs 1,250 yen, and is covered by the Nikko All Area Pass. A 2-day pass for unlimited bus rides between Nikko and Chuzenji Onsen is available for 2,300 yen at Tobu Nikko Station.
