Visitor guide for Kirifuri Waterfall (Kirifuri no taki) in Nikko

What to know

Kirifuri Waterfall (Kirifuri no taki) is a stunning 75-meter, two-tiered cascade located beneath the Kirifuri Highlands, just a few kilometers northeast of Nikko's temples and shrines. The elegant falls plunge down the mountainside, creating a beautiful contrast with the surrounding foliage—lush green in spring and summer, and blazing shades of red, orange, and gold in autumn.

The name Kirifuri means "falling mist," inspired by the fine spray that rises when the water hits the rocks at the base of the lower falls. On misty or foggy days, the view may be partially obscured. A trail once led to the base of the waterfall, but it collapsed several years ago and remains closed.

Today, visitors can enjoy the waterfall from a wooden observation deck perched high on the opposite side of the valley. The deck is a ten-minute walk along a mostly paved path from the parking lot and bus stop, where you'll also find two restaurants and public restrooms. The best time to see autumn colors is from late October to early November.

From April to November, buses run every 2-3 hours from JR Nikko and Tobu Nikko stations to Kirifuri Waterfall. Take a bus bound for Kirifuri Kogen (Kirifuri Plateau) and get off at the Kirifuri-no-taki bus stop. From there, it's a ten-minute walk to the observation deck. The bus ride takes about ten minutes, costs 380 yen one way, and is covered by the Nikko All Area Pass. Note that buses do not stop near Nikko's temples and shrines, and service is suspended from December to March.
