What to know
Perched at 1,400 meters above sea level, Senjogahara Marshland (戦場ヶ原) stretches across the plateau between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen. It boasts some of the finest hiking in Nikko National Park, especially stunning during the autumn foliage season in October when the marsh grasses turn reddish-yellow and the larch trees glow gold. Because of its natural beauty, the trails can get quite busy.
The Senjogahara Plateau Nature Trail follows the Yukawa River for most of its route from Yumoto Onsen to Ryuzu Waterfall near Lake Chuzenji. The hike offers sweeping views of the marsh and surrounding mountains and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete. Nearby, Odashirogahara is a smaller but equally charming marshland worth a detour or separate visit.
In winter, from December to March, the marsh is often blanketed with several centimeters of snow, and the hiking trails may become impassable. However, when enough snow accumulates, visitors can experience a different side of the marsh by walking the trails on snowshoes. There is also a network of cross-country skiing trails north of the Sanbonmatsu parking lot.
A couple of rest houses at the Sanbonmatsu parking lot rent snowshoes for about 500 yen for two hours or 1,000 yen per day. Cross-country ski rentals cost 1,800 to 2,000 yen per day. Guided half-day tours are also available but require advance reservations, and English guidance may be limited.
Senjogahara is accessible from central Nikko via Tobu bus. Buses depart from Tobu Nikko Station (many also stop at JR Nikko Station) heading to Yumoto Onsen, running once or twice per hour. The one-way trip from Tobu Nikko Station to Senjogahara takes about 70 minutes, costs around 1,700 yen, and is covered by the Nikko All Area Pass.
A 2-day pass for unlimited bus rides between Nikko and Yumoto Onsen is available for 3,500 yen at Tobu Nikko Station.
