Utsunomiya

Travel guide for Utsunomiya City, the capital of Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.

What to know

Utsunomiya (宇都宮) is the capital of Tochigi Prefecture and its largest city, situated less than an hour north of Tokyo by shinkansen and just southeast of the famous shrines and temples of Nikko. While it serves as a modern commercial hub, the area has deep roots in mining, with local Oya stone quarried for centuries and used as building material.

Utsunomiya is best known for its gyoza: small dumplings filled with meat and vegetables, served pan-fried, deep-fried, or boiled. The city boasts dozens of specialty restaurants offering a variety of fillings, including pork, kimchi, seafood, and more. Utsunomiya consistently ranks among the top cities for annual household gyoza consumption, a title it often trades with rivals Hamamatsu City in Shizuoka Prefecture and Miyazaki City.
