Visitor guide for Noboribetsu's Hell Valley

What to know

Jigokudani (Hell Valley) is a dramatic volcanic valley just above Noboribetsu Onsen, filled with steaming vents, sulfurous streams, and other geothermal activity. It is the primary source of Noboribetsu's famous hot spring waters.

From the valley, scenic walking trails lead through the wooded hills above Noboribetsu. A 20-30 minute walk brings you to Oyunuma, a sulfurous pond with a surface temperature of 50°C, and a smaller, even hotter mud pond nearby.

The Oyunumagawa River flows out of Oyunuma, still hot, through the forest, creating an otherworldly landscape. You can follow the river for several hundred meters and enjoy a natural foot bath (ashiyu) along the way.

Autumn colors in Noboribetsu typically peak in mid-October, adding vibrant hues to the already stunning scenery. In winter, some trails above Jigokudani may be impassable.

Jigokudani is located just north of Noboribetsu's hot spring town, a five-minute walk from the Noboribetsu Onsen bus terminal.
