What to know
During the Edo Period (1603–1868), Obuse flourished as a hub of art and culture. Today, this small town preserves its heritage with art museums, a sake brewery, shops, and restaurants lining narrow lanes and traditional buildings. Much of its fame comes from the painter Hokusai, who lived here for several years. The Hokusai Museum in the town center displays a collection of his works.
A short walk down Chestnut Alley leads to the rear entrance of the Takai Kozan Memorial Museum, the former home of the wealthy merchant who invited Hokusai to Obuse as his patron and student. The museum exhibits Kozan's paintings, often depicting ghosts and goblins, along with calligraphy. The building itself features hidden rooms and secret passages.
Just outside the town center are the Obuse Museum and Nakajima Chinami Gallery. The museum is a contemporary art space with rotating exhibitions, including works by local artists and the town's festival floats. The gallery focuses on local painter Nakajima Chinami, showcasing his detailed cherry blossom murals. The two venues are connected, and one ticket grants entry to both.
Obuse also offers several other museums, traditional shops, and trendy restaurants. The town runs a unique "My Garden" program where residents and eateries open their private gardens to visitors. Look for the "My Garden" sign to explore these hidden green spaces.
Further out lies Floral Garden Obuse, a Western-style garden with walking paths through flower beds, ponds, lawns, and a greenhouse. It also has a restaurant and gift shop selling plants. Opposite the garden is a small market with local produce.
Obuse is especially famous for its chestnuts, cultivated for over 600 years. Chestnut rice, jelly, cream, and ice cream are popular treats. Apples and grapes are also grown locally.
