Cape Hedo (Hedo Misaki)

Visitor guide for Hedo Misaki, Cape Misaki, at the northern tip of Okinawa Main Island.

What to know

North of Nago, Okinawa Honto is sparsely populated, covered mostly by forests and hills. Cape Hedo (辺戸岬, Hedo Misaki), the island's northernmost point, offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline via a small network of walking trails.

The main route to Cape Hedo follows the western coast. About halfway between Nago and the cape, you'll find a hiking trail to Hiji Waterfall and a resort hotel near Okuma Beach. For more scenic and less developed surroundings, take the eastern coastal road, which boasts beautiful seaside vistas.

Keep in mind that public transport is very limited along the western coast and nonexistent on the eastern side, so renting a car is almost essential.

Cape Hedo lies about 115 kilometers from Naha, at the northernmost tip of Okinawa Honto.

Hourly buses run as far north as Hentona Bus Terminal, 20 kilometers from the cape, but services beyond Hentona are too infrequent to rely on.

By car, the trip from Naha to Cape Hedo takes about 2.5 hours via the Okinawa Expressway between Naha and Nago (toll: 1040 yen one way).
