What to know
The Churaumi Aquarium (美ら海水族館, Churaumi Suizokukan) is widely regarded as Japan's finest aquarium. It is the centerpiece of Ocean Expo Park, built on the site of the 1975 International Ocean Expo in northern Okinawa Honto. The aquarium underwent a complete redesign and reopened in 2002.
The main attraction is the enormous Kuroshio Tank, one of the largest aquarium tanks in the world. It is named after the warm Kuroshio Current, which contributes to the rich diversity of Okinawa's marine life. The tank houses a wide variety of species, most notably giant whale sharks and manta rays.
The aquarium spans three floors, with the entrance on the third floor and exit on the first. Near the entrance, a large living coral exhibit greets visitors. The path then leads to the Kuroshio Tank, where guests often spend considerable time. Feeding shows occur twice daily. Adjacent to the tank is a high-definition theater showcasing Okinawa's marine life.
Beyond the Kuroshio Tank, several other exhibits await, including a shark area featuring live tiger sharks and bull sharks. Another section highlights the extremely deep waters around Okinawa, with displays of bioluminescent fish.
Outside the main building, free outdoor pools near the waterfront host shows with dolphins, sea turtles, and manatees.
Churaumi Aquarium is part of Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa Honto, about 90 kilometers from Naha.
