What to know
The Yanbaru region (山原) covers the northern part of Okinawa Main Island. Unlike the urbanized south, Yanbaru is less developed and more rural, with abundant subtropical forested hills and unique wildlife. In 2016, Yanbaru National Park was established here as Japan's 33rd national park.
Several endangered species live in the region, including the Yanbaru Kuina (Okinawa Rail), a small, nearly flightless bird found only here. Conservation efforts are underway, and several rail-related attractions have been set up.
Most tourist attractions in Yanbaru are nature-focused: walking trails through forests, observation points, and small museums about local flora and fauna. Below is a list of some highlights:
Public transport in Yanbaru is limited to infrequent local buses along the west coast, which don't serve all destinations. Buses on the remote east coast are even rarer, so renting a car is recommended.
