What to know
Grand Front Osaka (グランフロント大阪) is a vast commercial complex located north of JR Osaka Station in the Umeda district, opened in 2013. It features a diverse mix of shops and restaurants, an Intercontinental hotel, office and event spaces, and a residential tower. Elevated walkways connect the various buildings of Grand Front Osaka to each other and to Osaka Station.
Grand Front Osaka is the first phase of the Umekita (short for "Umeda North") redevelopment project, which aims to transform a large former freight railyard north of Osaka Station into a new city district. The next phase, Grand Green Osaka, is being opened gradually on the adjacent site and is expected to be fully completed by spring 2027.
Grand Front Osaka comprises a South Building, North Building, event hall, and residential tower:
The South Building features a skyscraper atop and is connected to Osaka Station via an elevated walkway. It is the first building you encounter from the station, housing mainly fashion and interior shops on the first six floors, and restaurants offering regional cuisine from across Japan on the next three floors. The skyscraper above is occupied by offices.
From the 2nd floor of the South Building, a walkway leads to the North Building, which has two skyscrapers built on top. In addition to more shopping and dining options, the core facility here is the Knowledge Capital, established to foster new products and services through cutting-edge technology and information. Visitors can explore these innovations at various showrooms and shops. The skyscrapers above house the Intercontinental Hotel Osaka and additional office space.
Completing the Grand Front Osaka complex is a 48-story residential tower behind the North Building and an event hall in front of the South Building. One of the goals of the redevelopment plans is to incorporate more open green spaces. Accordingly, Grand Front Osaka features several rooftop terrace gardens, a lush green garden at street level, and trees planted along the perimeter of the complex.
