What to know
Osaka has been the heart of bunraku, traditional Japanese puppet theater, for centuries. This art form flourished in the city during the Edo Period (1603–1868), when bunraku—like kabuki—offered rare entertainment for the common people, distinct from the amusements of the nobility.
The National Bunraku Theater (国立文楽劇場, Kokuritsu Bunraku Gekijō) in Osaka is one of the few venues where you can still experience this captivating art. English programs and earphone guides are available. Performances typically run for three weeks in January, April, June, July/August, and November.
The nearest station is Nippombashi Station on the Sennichimae and Tanimachi subway lines.
