What to know
Otaru Canal (小樽運河, Otaru Unga) was once the bustling heart of the city's port in the early 1900s. Large ships would unload cargo onto smaller boats, which then ferried goods to the warehouses lining the canal.
As modern docks allowed direct unloading of big vessels, the canal fell into disuse. Thanks to a local preservation movement, a section of the canal was beautifully restored in the 1980s instead of being filled in. The old warehouses were converted into museums, shops, and restaurants.
The canal is perfect for a leisurely daytime walk, where artists display their work to visitors. In the evening, old-fashioned gas lamps create a romantic atmosphere. It is also the main venue for Otaru's Snow Light Path Festival.
The canal is a ten-minute walk or a two-minute bus ride from Otaru Station along the main road.
